Northampton’s 781st Mayor Making Ceremony took place at the Guildhall yesterday,
Councillor Rufia Ashraf, Chair of the newly formed Northampton Town Council, took up the role at the authority’s first full meeting.
She succeeds Councillor Brian Sargeant who was the last Mayor created by the now abolished Northampton Borough Council.
In addition to the Mayor Making the new town council’s committees and sub-committees were set up and new Town Clerk Stuart Carter was appointed, following on from Richard Walden who worked hard to help create the new authority.
Councillor Ashraf was born and raised in St James and is proudly the first woman of Bangladeshi heritage to take on the role.
She is a mother of three who wants to make Northampton a “cleaner, greener” place to live and hopes to raise awareness of environmental issues and litter.
The Deputy Mayor will be Dennis Meredith from Southfields, who has survived a battle with Covid-19 and recently celebrated his Golden Wedding anniversary.
