Flea the kitten had been missing for a week when its owners heard a familiar meowing coming from the well at the bottom of their garden.
Despite being covered with a grating the kitten had somehow got through and fallen 20ft to the bottom which had about a foot of water in it.
The owners from Loddington today phoned Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue service which despatched a fire crew from Rothwell and the Animal Rescue Unit.
Wire cutters were used to get through the grating and an officer was lowered deep enough to recover Flea who had managed to perch on a ledge above the water. Cat food was used to entice Flea into the arms of its rescuer.
All crews were heading back to base by 4pm.
