Saints are gearing up for a tough encounter with Saracens on Saturday but revelling in the rewards of playing ‘go for it’ style rugby.
Lewis Ludlam said this week that no-one knew Dave Ribbans was about to pounce for the line as the clock ran down against Bath last weekend.
A tap and go is something you are more likely to see from a tricky back but ‘Ribeye’ or ‘Ribbo’ saw the opportunity and crashed over, handing James Grayson a conversion opportunity under the posts.
Lewis who grew up as a fan of the Saints and is now emerging as a key first team player said: “No-one had a clue, only Dave Ribbans knew that he was going to go for the line. We would have had a different conversation if he hadn’t got there! But thankfully he got over the line in the end.”
Fans were thrilled with the last gasp win but Saints playing staff were grounded about the nature of the 27-26 victory.
“It was pretty positive, it wasn’t the sort of performance we wanted. But you need to be on the right end of those kind of results. We have been on the wrong end of those a few times.It is nice to cross the line in the final few minutes.
“It was a really difficult game. They made it really hard for us to play our expansive game and slowed the breakdown for us. Really tough game hopefully we can improve and learn those lessons and take into the weekend,” said Lewis.
Saracens will be a real challenge after the London table toppers got beaten by Gloucester last weekend but with Saints mining a rich vein of form it is hard to predict outcomes.
“They are league leaders in Europe. Sarries is not going to be an easy game by any stretch of the imagination but we have got a clear game plan,” said Lewis.
