Over 14,000 people have signed a petition to save the centre which is a purpose built facility to support those struggling with issues around homelessness.

The Hope Centre has enjoyed non-partisan political support over the years with representatives of all political parties fund-raising for it and serving on its board.

However Mr Corbyn took the chance to throw his weight behind the campaign and called for plans to remove the drop-in facilities so extra sleeping units can be installed to be reversed.

He was speaking at the Doddridge Centre in St James where he was met by former Northampton North MP Sally Keeble.

He also discussed the benefits of a cradle to grave education service, the blight of homelessness generally and opposition to plans to divide Northamptonshire into west and east unitary authorities.
